Alvaro Siza, International Prize for Plastic Arts FCG 2010

The Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza has been awarded with the Cristóbal Gabarrón Foundation International Prize for Plastic Arts for 2010. According to the jury’s verdict the prize was awarded “for the international relevance of his works, his status as master of architects and his defence of a transparent architecture, respectful of the environment where it is located. The jury also wanted to highlight his ability to develop a touching poetry in the buildings through his work with spaces and light”.

Alvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira, known in Portugal as Alvaro Siza Vieria or Siza Vieira was born in Matosinhos in 1933, a port town close to Oporto. He wanted to be a sculptor but he studied Architecture so as not to upset his father, mainly after visiting Barcelona at the end of 1940s and seeing the works of the Catalonian architect Antoni Gaudí.

One of his buildings is presently being built in Bilbao, at the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU): the University Auditorium in the central area of Abandoibarra. The building, with an L shape, is expected to be finished during summer 2010.


Castilla-La Mancha Design Awards

The jury agreed to give the 2009 Castilla-La Mancha Design Award, in the category of Designers to Ana González, from Toledo, known in the fashion world as Ana Locking, and in the category of Enterprises to the company Tecnología Señalética S.L. (Tecnoseñal) of the Tecnove Group, located in Herencia, Ciudad Real. This year, for the first time, five Castilla-La Mancha Medals of Merit in Design have been awarded. The prizewinners are: Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño “Pedro Almodóvar” in Ciudad Real and Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño “Antonio López” de Tomelloso both for having implemented Further Design Studies.

The Mezquita de Tornerías Foundation has also been awarded with one of the Medals for its constant dedication, -over 20 years, to the Concurso de Diseño Aplicado a la Artesanía. These awards, which have been organized by the Centro de Diseño de Castilla-La Mancha since 2005, have the aim of recognizing, promoting and incentivizing those companies for which Design is a successful element in their innovation strategy as well as those designers who stand out for their professional career in our region.
